My name is Katherine Chen, and I am a passionate and creative thinker who loves to uplift people. I am also a certified diabetes educator and registered dietitian (and also a pianist!).
Helping people help themselves is so rewarding to me. My priority is to empower you to have the highest quality of life through health and nutrition. I will seek to learn from you about your experiences, your obstacles, and your goals. Through understanding your individuality and interests, we will design a successful strategy together that you will feel great about. Enjoy peace of mind every time you eat!
I grew up in a culture that embraced the value and benefits of food. It wasn't until college that I discovered it was something I could fully explore-and that it was a science! Ultimately, I completed my studies in human nutrition and food science at Cal Poly Pomona for my undergraduate degree, and the University of Southern California for my master's degree. To become fully prepared to practice as a registered dietitian, I received clinical training and mentorship from Children's Hospital Los Angeles and Keck Medicine of USC.
Throughout my career as a clinical dietitian, I have enjoyed the privilege of providing nutrition care and counseling to individuals of various cultures at LA General Medical Center, Keck Medicine of USC, City of Hope and Kaiser Permanente. During my practice, I noticed a common theme in many of my clients- that of blood sugar concerns to manage or mitigate diabetes. Recognizing the need to advance my clinical knowledge and quality of care to better serve whom I was helping, I dedicated myself to achieving the Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist credential (formerly known as Certified Diabetes Educator).
Some of my other work has expanded into public health as a CMS qualified Nutrition Consultant for LA County and the State of California, evaluating care in health facilities and enforcing standards, regulations and best practices. My passion is also to bridge the gap of food insecurity through my Edible Healing Garden project and by applying Food as Medicine. I currently work to provide medically tailored meals and am actively involved in collaboratives, workgroups, and roundtables that address food and nutrition insecurity.
That's a lot about me for now - I look forward to getting to know you as well!
